What To Do When You Start Having Contractions

Yay! Labor has started! But don't get too excited yet!

There is a reason they call it labor, it is hard work and is very tiring. The absolute best thing that you can do when you start feeling contractions is REST.

If you have ever sat through a class that required a lot of thinking on your part, then you know thinking can exhaust you. By the end of the day, you are tuckered out and ready for bed.

Labor is the same exact way.

There is absolutely no reason to begin timing contractions from the first twinge. This will just cause you to focus on each and every contraction and will exhaust you to no end. So, ignore them! If it's night time, go to bed. If it's during the day, take it easy. Rest and ignore as much as you can. This will make your labor seem to go by much faster and you will conserve much needed energy for later on.

Also, realize that your baby will be born soon (typically within a day or two), so use this as a time to have this last moment with just you and your partner. Have sex, go on a date, go for a walk, watch a movie, bake some cookies (pssst... Your nurse will LOVE some cookies). As you are waiting for things to pick up, do things you will not be doing for a while.

So try your best to keep your mind off of your contractions as much as possible!

And REST. When things pick up and turn into active labor, you will know.
